Cactus theft is a major problem in California

Well at least in Palm City. Golden Barrel cactii can sell for as much as $800 apiece, and $20,000 worth has been stolen in the last six months. To deter theft, officials plan to install security cameras and insert tracking microchips into the cactii. Link.

Meanwhile, under the category of couldn't make it up if you tried, environmental groups are protesting the creation of solar energy plants because those would disrupt the pristine beauty of the desert. Link.
