“American Qur’an” and other recent works by Sandow Birk

Four recent projects by Sandow Birk. You'll find more images at the links:

American Qur’an: "An ongoing project to transcribe the entire Koran according to Islamic traditions and illuminate the text with scenes from contemporary American life." On display at the Koplin Del Rio in Culver City, Los Angeles.

California Dreaming #1: A found object assemblage completed with Elyse Pignolet.

The Depravites of War: A series of 15 large scale woodblock prints inspired by the series of etchings by Jacques Callot's "The Miseries of War" in the 17th century, which in turn were the inspiration for Goya's "The Disasters of War" in the 19th century.

Ceramic tile mural at the new headquarters of the Baywatch Avalon station of the Los Angeles County Lifeguards on Catalina Island.

Birk's In Smog and Thunder: Historical Works from the Great War of the Californias is one of my favorite art books, available at Amazon.

*Previously: Mosaic tile wallpaper.
