The Americana at Brand (this one's for my Los Angeles readers)

The Americana at Brand is almost exactly like The Grove - - similar stores, trolley, water jets. Two differences: (1) I saw several uniformed Glendale police officers at The Americana, which I have not noticed at The Grove; (2) the men and women's bathrooms in the Barnes & Noble both had lines out the door. When's the last time, outside of a concert or sporting event, that you had to wait in line to use a bathroom?

Here's a funny moment at the bathroom. The men's room had two stalls and one urinal. I was waiting in line with my very young son and, when we were first in line, one of the stalls opened up. I led him to the stall, but he told me he wanted to use the urinal. I returned to the line and told the guy behind me (one of those uniformed police officers) that he could use the stall and we would wait. He said to me, "Uh, no, I'll trust your judgment." I assured him there was nothing wrong with the stall.
