Link roundup

1. Didn't work for me, but apparently you can play right in your browser the Alice: Madness Returns demo.

2. Speaking of video games, The Old Republic is $45 right now at Amazon. (Again, it's fascinating watching the algorithm work. When I started writing this post, a third party seller was offering the $45 (with shipping) rate. And just after I published, Amazon, which had been selling it for $53 matched the $45 price.)

3. Oreos had to stop being Oreos to succeed in China. Via.

4. Cool video of remote control planes modified to look like flying people. A marketing stunt, of course.

1. Cory Doctorow's auctioning off the naming rights to a character in an upcoming book (for charity).

2. "Even as experts predict that the 2012 presidential race will be the most expensive in U.S. history, a funny thing is happening on the way to the Republican nomination: It’s becoming one of the cheapest primaries in a more than a decade."

3. Fried Squid Po' Boy with Avocado and Black Chile Oil recipe.

4. A very specific breakdown of why the Philadelphia Eagles have been so bad. (There's a lot of experts who owe the Raiders an apology for ripping them for letting Nnamdi Asomugha go.)

Link roundup

1. Grantland:
Over the past five seasons, the Patriots have used 11 picks in the first three rounds of the NFL draft on defensive players. Only three of those players started on Sunday, and only one — safety Patrick Chung — has been playing at an above-average level this season. Three more (linebacker Jerod Mayo, cornerback Ras-I Dowling, and defensive lineman Ron Brace) are injured. Linebacker Jermaine Cunningham, a second-round pick in 2010, was a healthy scratch. The other four players have all been cut, including three players who would have been important cogs in the New England secondary if they'd developed. If Matt Millen had made these same 11 picks, we'd be laughing at him.
2. "Let’s cut to the chase: sugar doesn’t make kids hyper."

3. Apparently some guy was caught submitting another artist's work at the Golden Demon contest in Australia.

1. "Divers find 13th century wreck from Kublai Khan's Mongol invasion fleet that was destroyed by 'divine' typhoon."

2. Finally ate at Michael Voltaggio's sandwich place ink.sack. Sandwiches are about $6 each, there was no line at 11:30, and that was good because it took them forever to make the food. Thumbs down on the cold fried chicken, which tasted only of the ranch dressing, but thumbs up for the spicy tuna, Jose Andres, and CLT. I'll definitely go back.

3. Trailer for Super TIME Force (bullet hell).

4. Papercraft calendars and creatures (some cute monster paper toys for October). Via.

1. I didn't realize that the 3 3/4" Venture Brothers action figures won't be made unless there's enough preoders, and they're not remotely close to the alleged cutoff.

2. Serious Eats: "We Tried Everything at Chipotle's New ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen in D.C."
